A Brand New You

II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

I don’t think it’s wrong to say that some verses are easier for some people to grasp than others.  Our life experiences make this the case.  For example, for the person who is saved out of a lifestyle of degradation and overt sinfulness, such as pornography, drunkenness, abusiveness, etc., they might clearly see the truth of today’s verse.  However, for the one who was raised in a Christian home, who may have come to the Lord early, or the one who just hasn't had much of this world's trouble, this verse may be more difficult to grasp.

We might think, ‘I was kept from serious sin, so a 180 wasn’t necessary’.  But the truth of the matter is, no matter our starting point, we are saved, if we are saved at all, from sin and sinfulness.  Some people indulge their sinfulness, while others hide it, but ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  Therefore, ALL are in desperate need of a Savior.  We often look at sin from a human point of view, rather than from God’s point of view.

The old way is one of self-directed choices and what I want.  Thinking my own thoughts and directing my own paths.  The new way is submission to God and what He wants.  I am a new creation, not because I don’t beat my wife anymore, but because I filter what I think, what I say, and what I do, through submission to Christ.  I’m a new creation when I ‘look God in the face’ and ask “Would you think about this issue this way?”, “Would you say this?”, or “Would you do this?”.

The world does not do this.  The world revels in its own opinions.  The world loves to consider wisdom comes from other sources than scripture.  The world will say what it wants to say and do what it wants to do.  To the degree that we also feel that way, we are not living for God.  Am I a new creation?  Or am I just a version 2.0 of everyone else?

God Bless

Pastor Russ
